Fiduciary Duties & Responsibilities

Join the Western Pension & Benefits Council, Seattle Chapter, as we welcome Chris Swanson, Deputy Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Labor/Employee Benefits Security Administration. 

This presentation will cover what to expect from an EBSA investigation, including fiduciary duties and responsibilities, an overview of the investigative process, examples of some common violations, and a brief introduction to EBSA’s voluntary fiduciary compliance program.

Chris Swanson is Deputy Director for the San Francisco Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA). EBSA’s mission is to protect the security of the retirement, health, and other workplace related benefits of American workers and their families. The San Francisco Regional Office is one of EBSA’s ten nationwide regional offices, and covers Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska.

Chris has worked for EBSA for 15 years, including as an investigator and supervisory investigator. As the Deputy Director, he coordinates with the Regional Director to oversee the daily operations of the region, which includes an outreach, education, and assistance program, as well as an enforcement program.
